Important Information about John and Abigail Adams Scholarship

Have you received the Massachusetts John and Abigail Adams Scholarship? If not yet, you must keep the MCAS test on your to-do list to win this scholarship.

It is a merit-based scholarship program and provides tuition credit of up to eight semesters for undergraduate education at Massachusetts state college or university. The Massachusetts Board of Education administers the program.

The purpose of the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship is to:

  • Reward the students for their achievement and inspire them to continue
  • Attract more number of students with good performance to Massachusetts public higher education
  • Provide the necessary financial assistance to families of college-bound students

Qualified students receive the award letters and other related information in the fall of senior year. The award letters are very important because students are obligated to provide a copy of the award letter and duly filled FAFSA application each year.

If a student cannot provide the award letter, the college/university will not apply for the tuition credit. To know more about the program, stay tuned.

Who is eligible for John and Abigail Adams Scholarship? 

To be eligible for this scholarship, each student must take the 10th grade Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) test. If selected, the student must enroll in Massachusetts public high during the senior year. Here are the details of eligibility criteria:

Students in Class 2015 or Earlier Must

  • Score in the advanced category on Mathematics or English Language Arts section of grade 10 MCAS test 
  • Score in an advanced or proficient category on the second subject (English Language Arts or Mathematics)
  • Have the combined MCAS score on the assessments that ranks in the top 25% in the school district

Students in Class 2016 or After Must 

  • Score in the advanced category out of three high school state assessment tests in Mathematics, English Language Arts or STE (Biology, Chemistry, Introductory Physics or Technology/Engineering) on the section of grade 10 MCAS test 
  • Score in an advanced or proficient category on remaining high school state assessment tests (English Language Arts or Mathematics)
  • Have the combined MCAS score on the assessments that ranks in the top 25% in the school district

Additional requirements

Students must also meet the following requirements for the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship

  • Must be United States Citizen or non-citizen authorized by Federal Government to live and work in the United States temporarily or permanently
  • Must be enrolled in an eligible institute for certificate, associate, or bachelor degree program (minimum 12 credits or its equivalent)
  • Should not have received the prior degree
  • Have filled out the Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Compliance with applicable law on Selective Service Registration
  • Must not be in default on federal or state student loans for the cost of attendance at any institution or owe any refund for received financial aid

Scholarship Amount

The qualified students for the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship get merit-based tuition credit. The credit is awarded for the state universities or community colleges and shall not be more than the undergraduate tuition rate at the participating institution.

Tuition waiver can be used for eight semesters of undergraduate education provided that he maintains a 3.0 GPA or higher. Tuition award at the University of Massachusetts is $1,714 at Boston, Amherst, and Dartmouth, and $1,454 at Lowell.

John and Abigail Adams application procedure 

Students don’t have to follow a specific application process for the scholarship. Those who are eligible will get notified in the fall semester of senior year in high school.

Students from a public university in another state or enrolled in a private college can also use the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship on transferring to a public college or university of Massachusetts. However, they must have maintained an accumulative 3.0 GPA to activate the scholarship.
