5 Free Design Skills (Like Bar Chart Making) That Can Boost Your Graduate CV in 2026

Most graduate CVs do not need more decoration. They need better evidence. A small design skill such as using a bar chart maker can help because it shows that you can turn information into something another person understands quickly.

That distinction matters in 2026. Employers are not impressed by a list of software names on its own; they want to see what you used a skill to achieve. The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) reported that nearly 90% of employers responding to its Job Outlook 2025 survey wanted evidence of problem-solving, while nearly 80% looked for teamwork on student resumes. Design is useful here because it can make both kinds of evidence visible.

What counts as a design skill on a graduate CV?

A design skill is not simply “being creative”. It is a repeatable way of making information clearer, more useful, or easier to act on. You can learn the basics with free tools, university software, or a spreadsheet, then demonstrate the result in a course project, society role, part-time job, volunteering activity, or portfolio.

The best test is simple: can you show the original problem, your design decision, and the result? That turns a vague claim such as “good visual communication” into evidence an interviewer can ask about.

1. Data visualisation: make numbers tell the right story

Bar chart making is an excellent first skill because it sits between analysis and design. You need to choose useful categories, label the axes, select a sensible scale, and make comparisons obvious. A neat-looking chart with a misleading scale is not good design; it is a faster way to misunderstand the data.

Practise with a small public dataset, a survey of your student society, or figures from a research project. Create one chart that answers one question, such as “Which event attracted the most attendees?” Add a short caption explaining the finding. Adobe Express says its free chart tool lets users enter numerical data, add labels and customise colour, size and layout.

On your CV, the evidence might read:

  • Analysed attendance data from four society events and designed a bar chart that identified the strongest day and location for future promotion.
  • Visualised survey responses for a group presentation, simplifying five response categories into a clear comparison for a non-technical audience.

That is stronger than “Adobe Express” or “data visualisation” sitting alone in a skills list.

2. Presentation design: give every slide one job

Presentation design is not the same as adding a stylish template. It is the discipline of deciding what your audience needs to notice, remember, or do next. A strong slide normally has one main point, a clear visual hierarchy, readable type, and enough empty space to prevent the message being buried.

A well-designed presentation helps an audience compare ideas without making the speaker read the slide aloud.

Take a presentation you already made for university and redesign three slides. Replace a paragraph with a diagram, turn a list into a two-column comparison, and put the conclusion in the slide title. Then ask one person who has not seen the project to explain the argument back to you.

This gives you a concrete CV example: “Redesigned a 12-slide group presentation to clarify the recommendation and presented the findings to 30 classmates.” If you have presented research, a campaign proposal, or a business case, the same skill can support applications in marketing, consulting, education, communications, and operations.

3. Infographic design: edit before you decorate

Infographics are useful when a reader needs to grasp a process, timeline, comparison, or set of key facts quickly. The difficult part is not finding icons. It is deciding what to remove.

Start with a one-page brief. Write the intended audience, the single takeaway, and three to five supporting facts. Group related information, use consistent spacing, and keep the decorative elements subordinate to the explanation. If the infographic only works when you talk someone through it, simplify it again.

Infographic design combines research, editing and visual hierarchy, not just colour and icons.

A graduate might create an infographic explaining a laboratory method, summarising local recycling rules, mapping a customer journey, or presenting findings from a dissertation. Save the final version and, if possible, keep a short note about the design choices you made. That note becomes useful interview preparation.

On the CV, focus on the communication problem: “Translated a 2,000-word research summary into a one-page infographic for first-year students.” The word “translated” signals judgement and audience awareness.

4. Layout and typography: make information easy to scan

Typography is one of the least glamorous and most employable design skills. It covers choices such as font size, line spacing, alignment, contrast, heading levels, and the order in which a reader encounters information.

Use it on a society newsletter, event poster, lab handout, project report, or portfolio page. Give headings a consistent hierarchy. Align related elements. Keep body text comfortably readable. Use one accent colour rather than turning every section into a different visual announcement.

This skill also explains why an over-designed CV can backfire. The University of St Andrews advises graduates to use a clear, consistent structure and warns that unusual fonts, graphics, or designs may confuse an applicant tracking system. Its careers guidance also recommends matching relevant terms from the job description and describing what you did and what happened as a result.

My view is that a graduate CV should be visually calm, even if the applicant is applying for a creative role. Put the more expressive work in a portfolio. Let the CV prove that you can prioritise.

5. Accessible visual communication: design for more than yourself

Accessible design means making information usable for people with different vision, hearing, motor, cognitive, or reading needs. You do not need to become an accessibility specialist to show the habit. Start with high text contrast, meaningful headings, descriptive image text, readable font sizes, captions for video, and information that does not depend on colour alone.

For a chart, label the important values rather than expecting the reader to decode colour. For a presentation, read the slide order aloud and check that the message still makes sense without animation. For a document, use actual heading styles rather than making text look like a heading by enlarging it.

This is not merely a technical extra. It is evidence that you think about the people who use your work. Adobe’s own 2025 accessibility report for its desktop and iPad product documents limitations affecting the Bar Chart interface, including cases where visual information may be difficult to understand for people with low vision. The practical lesson is to check the finished communication yourself rather than assuming that a tool’s output is automatically accessible.

How to turn five skills into CV evidence

Do not add five new buzzwords to a skills section and stop there. Build one small project that combines two or three skills, then describe it with an action, a context, and an outcome.

  1. Choose a real audience. A student society committee, classmate, community group, or imaginary employer is enough.
  2. Start with a messy source. Use survey answers, research notes, event figures, or a long set of instructions.
  3. Make one useful output. For example, a chart-led one-page report, a three-slide recommendation, or an accessible event guide.
  4. Ask for specific feedback. Do not ask whether someone likes it. Ask what they noticed first and what remained unclear.
  5. Record the evidence. Note the audience, tool, number of items processed, deadline, and any change that followed.

Careers guidance from Prospects makes the same broader point: skills should be demonstrated through specific examples, and data analysis can be supported by linking to visualisations, dashboards, or portfolio work. A project link is optional, but the explanation is not.

Where should these skills appear on your graduate CV?

Put the skill wherever the evidence naturally belongs. A chart created for a dissertation can sit under Education or Projects. A campaign poster can sit under Volunteering or Society Leadership. A presentation redesign can appear under a placement, part-time job, or relevant coursework.

Use a compact skills section for searchable terms such as “data visualisation”, “presentation design”, “typography”, or the software you can genuinely use. Then prove the most relevant skills in two or three achievement bullets. This approach is safer for applicant tracking systems and more persuasive to a human reader than a progress bar claiming you are 90% proficient.

The design skill that gives you the quickest return

If you only have time for one exercise, make a short data story. Find a small dataset, create a clear bar chart, write a three-sentence interpretation, and present it in one slide. That single exercise can demonstrate data handling, visual hierarchy, written communication, audience awareness, and presentation judgement.

Then keep the original spreadsheet, the first draft, the final version, and the feedback. Your CV gets one concise bullet; your interview answer gets a credible story. That is the real advantage of free design skills in 2026: not a prettier document, but visible proof that you can make complicated work easier for someone else to use.
