Save your cents while writing a check

Today, every bank facilitates its customers with plastic money to make them carry unlimited money hassle-free.

Just swipe your card anywhere and complete a transaction. However, there could be several circumstances where you have to write a check. So you must know how to write it.

But how can you save your cents while writing a check? Many people are unaware of the fact that several cents are deducted automatically when you write an amount in the check. There could be several reasons for it. In this article, we’ll talk about all those essentials so that you can write a check without cents.

Check out the given instruction in this article for preventing unnecessary deduction of your cents

6 Steps To Write A Check Without Cents

How Can You Save Your Cents While Writing A Check

No matter how digital banking has become, a check will always be a crucial part of banking, so you must know how to write it. Here are 6 steps to write a check without cents. Make sure you follow each step correctly to prevent the bank from deducting unnecessary cents from your account. Please write according to the following sequence.

Enter Date

The date is foremost the important aspect of a check. Banks pass the transaction via check by ensuring the date mentioned on it. The date box is situated at the top right corner, and you have to enter the date according to the given format.

It can be DD/MM/YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY, so it is important to write the date accordingly. It is also possible that banks do not cash the check after months, like three, six, or twelve.

Enter The Title Of the Receiver

In the next step, you have to write the person’s name or the company for which you’re writing this check. The title will be noted on the box referred to as “Pay To.” But keep this in mind to write the name with a complete description as given below.

For instance, you want to write a check for John to pay rent for your house. However, if your landlord is a company, you’ll replace the name John with the company’s name.

Check Amount

As soon as you write the title for the check, you’d have to write the amount you want to transfer or cash. The numerical value of the amount will be written on the right line of “Pay to the order of.” The line will already contain the currency sign, so you only have to write the numbers.

However, if you want to know how to write the check without cents, make sure you put decimal and two zeros after the amount. This will clearly state the total amount and prevent the bank from altering it anyways.

Write Amount In Words

After writing the numerical figure, you have to write the alphabetical amount to make sure you write the right amount. “Amount in words” is written below the “Pay To,” You must write the total amount alphabetically.

Moreover, since you put decimals and zeros in the figure, you also have to write n/100 at the end of the alphabetical amount to specify it is written without cents.

Add Memo

There is another requirement to add a memo (if any) while writing a check. You can find the section “For” at the bottom left corner of the check. This is to write any additional information to notify the receiver or self-purposes.

For instance, you pay your house rent every month via check to your landlord. In that case, you’ll write “Rent for the Month” as a memo.

Sign Your Check

Here we have the last and the most crucial point of writing a check―signatures. Signatures are the way of providing consent to all the details mentioned above in the check. And no bank can make any kind of transaction without the check bearing the signatures of the account holder.

So please make sure you sign your check before handing it over to the bank.

How To Involve Cents In Your Check?

How Can You Save Your Cents While Writing A Check

Until now, you learned how to write a check without cents but what if you have to include cents in your check? Well, for that, the process is a bit different. Let’s say you have to pay $156.77 to someone via check. So you will include cents by writing 77/100 to specify the bank that cents are to be included. Even if there are no cents included, you still have to mention no/100.

How To Write Check For Cents Only

There might be an occasion where you just have to pay cents to someone, and you’re short of them. Even in that situation, you can write a check for them. You just have to care for a few things when only cents are to be paid.

The amount box on the right side of the check already contains the $ sign, so you don’t have to write it again with the figure. You have to pay 50 cents, so you will write 50 cents as “0.50”. A zero on the left side with a decimal and the cents amount.

But make sure you write the figure close to the dot as it wouldn’t be difficult to turn 0 into 8 because all you have to do is make another circle above them. Similarly, there must be no space remaining between figures that give a chance to someone to add false figure numbers.
