Seat allocation as we know it - in which trainees are restricted to a specific department/practice area - does not exist at Ince & Co. Whilst the six month rotation system is used (whereby trainees are assigned four different partners with whom they’ll sit with for six months each), Ince trainees can undertake work from anyone in the firm who has work on offer, regardless of their practice area.
This system allows trainees to become exposed to a variety of work, without having to focus on one particular aspect of the practice. It also enables trainees to carry their caseload with them when they move seats; so working on a matter from start to finish is a common occurrence during a training contract at Ince & Co.
Trainees need to be proactive in obtaining work, which can range from meeting clients and attending courts, to drafting correspondence; conducting research; preparing documentation; and meeting and dealing with other lawyers and counsel, both at the firm and externally.
This broad-based system of work continues for a further two years after qualification following which the individual then specialises into a particular area of the firm’s practice.
