Everything that surrounds Mark Zuckerberg makes the headlines. The founder of Facebook (now Meta) is one of those media personalities who never goes unnoticed. Sometimes voluntarily, through his actions or statements, in other cases because of something like the nickname, related to The Lord of the Rings, that he has among his employees.
One thing is quite clear. Mark Zuckerberg is not a person who leaves anyone indifferent. He is a businessman who has clearly shown proactive activity, sometimes bordering on obsessive behavior, in relation to his business projects.
This is relatively common among some of the so-called new geniuses of the technology business. What happens is that, in Zuckerberg’s case, everything is much more dimensional.
Today, we have statements from Mark Zuckerberg himself, in which he admits that in his work environment he is known by nothing less than the nickname of “The Eye of Sauron”.
Why is Mark Zuckerberg called the Eye of Sauron?
If we listen to the CEO himself, this nickname is given to him in an amusing way because of his huge dedication to work.
On The Tim Ferriss Show, he said that he maintains a constant level of attention and awareness about everything that is going on in the company. He said that there is a huge volume of constant information that he accesses and wants to process. That is why, he understands, employees give him this nickname related to being in control and keeping an eye on everything going on in the company.
Taken in this way, and apparently, with humor, it could be understood as a particular joke in which the executive’s dedication to his own company is valued with a nickname.
However, it could also have other interpretations.
The Eye of Sauron?
If you are not a fan of the Lord of the Rings series, it is worth placing the figure of Sauron and his famous Eye in perspective. This might give you a different perspective on the nickname and you might even doubt whether it is a loving nickname.
In J. R. R. Tolkien’s famous trilogy, Sauron is evil personified. But more than that, he represents the corruption of goodness and its transformation into evil. At the same time, his mind controls and manipulates his followers.
On the other hand, the mythical Eye of Sauron is visualized as a huge control mechanism through which all possible information is accessed, regardless of privacy or the resources to obtain it.
Of course, we can believe that this is an affectionate nickname, but this other variable, that refers to a somewhat darker side of Zuckerberg, is too good to ignore.
Probably, as always, time will tell whether the nickname was affectionate, or whether it was a reflection of the Facebook founder’s methods and ways.
