One of the main reasons people are attracted to PR consultancy is simple: the work is rarely the same from day to day. If you’re the sort of person who believes variety is the spice of life, then this career path could be for you!

A PR consultant will be expected to know what’s going to happen before it happens. Impossible as it sounds, this involves knowing your client’s needs, what their competitors are up to and being at the heart and soul of what is happening in the media.

What does a PR consultant do?

The role requires reactive and proactive consultancy. This means creating news and ‘selling in’ to the media, whilst also fielding any separate questions they may have for the client. Simply, it’s about keeping the reputation of the client as favourable as possible under the prying eyes of the public.

Essentially, the main part of your job will involve acting as the eyes and ears of your various clients; they will rely on your knowhow and expertise in all situations.

Your responsibilities might involve spotting interview opportunities and basically being the face of the brand you are representing. Additionally, you might be writing press releases, doing some public speaking, organising events and handling any (hopefully rare) moments of crisis.
