Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, better known as Virginia Tech, is one of the leading higher education institutions in the United States. If you are interested in studying at a renowned university and wonder if “is Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine Ranking?” the answer is yes. According to U.S. News & World Report, it is ranked number 81 out of 112.
It offers a wide variety of careers and is considered one of the top six military schools in the country. In addition, it has one of the most renowned medical schools. The medical school annually receives thousands of applicants who apply to study in its classrooms. Still, only a few passed all the filters established to meet the student profile.
The university receives thousands of applicants annually who go through a four-step filter. The number of applicants is filtered until the final list of admitted students is established in each of them. If you want to apply or know what the process is, we address each phase here below.
Phase one: Application to AMCAS
Applicants to the Virginia Carilion School of Medicine should begin applying through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS). The entity’s website opens in May for interested applicants to send in applications.
Interested applicants will have until December 1 to submit their applications. That means they have plenty of time during the first phase.
Phase two: Secondary application
The university will send the secondary application to candidates who meet the academic requirements. To be eligible for the secondary application, you need:
- Recent MCAT average with a score equal to or above 504.
- Competitive GPA
- Ability to meet the technical admission standards
- Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident
- Hold a license from an educational institution within the U.S. or Canada and verified by a regional accrediting body
- Have no felony convictions
The request for a secondary application comprises brief essay instructions, acknowledgment of requirements, letters of recommendations, and a $70 non -refundable fee. Applicants who qualify for the AAMC’s Fee Assistance Program (FAP) will receive a discount on the fee.
Those successful students will receive an email with a link to the secondary application.
Consider these recommendations to apply to this phase successfully
The university requests a minimum of three letters but recommends four to seven. A science or mathematics faculty member should write one, one should be by a physician professor or research mentor, and a third from a health or committee advisor.
To advance to the next phase, candidates must submit a complete application. The lowest criteria for considering the application complete are:
- Completion of the AMCAS online application with MCAT scores.
- Completed secondary application
- Minimum three letters of recommendation
- No criminal record
- A history of medical service, research experience, leadership activities, and teamwork
Phase Three: Interviews
If you pass phase two, you will receive an email notifying you of your success. It will state the date and time of the interview and the name of your interviewer. In the past study cycles, interviews were conducted via Zoom as a security measure following the Covid-19 pandemic; however, the university will resume face-to-face interviews in the fall and winter months.
The interview consists of a scenario and a traditional interview. These are recorded and will include a curriculum presentation, a career overview, and a tour of the facilities.
Phase Four: Acceptance
In late fall and early winter, the university sends emails to all applicants admitted to the program. Those who did not receive immediate admission will also receive an email explaining their status and will be in the “active status group” position. From the following April 30, this “active status group” becomes a waiting list.
After receiving the acceptance email, applicants have two weeks to send a letter to the Admissions Office stating their decision to accept or decline the offer. If you take the student place, you must create an account on the virtual campus and complete a form to reserve classes. Enrollment depends on the terms and conditions established by the faculty.
