We currently have an opportunity for an Apprentice within our UK Highways Business team based in Exeter. We are delivering a diverse range of projects across the local authority and highways markets. The Highways apprentice technician will become part of a respected and ambitious company with excellent career prospects and international opportunities.

This role includes funded day release to complete a Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician apprenticeship, this is a 2 years course with Exeter College.

Our UK Transport Team has over a 1000 people across the UK working on some of the largest projects on behalf of its core clients. Whilst most of the role is likely to be office based there may be some opportunities to work from other offices where appropriate.

As a Highways Apprentice will be working will join the highways team and assist in aspects of highways drainage design. Tasks include:

  • To support the preparation of designs, reports, specifications and other deliverables for highways schemes. 

  • To ensure that designs are appropriate and meet expected levels of technical excellence. 

  • To seek innovation in the delivery of schemes and techniques used to design and construct them.

  • Supporting feasibility, design and supervision of improvements to existing highway infrastructure including site visits, inspections and surveys, compliance with statutory procedures, cost estimating, and financial reporting. Making use of specialist computer software as appropriate. 

  • Supporting working and liaising effectively with contractors, suppliers and outside agencies and participating effectively in partnership arrangements with our clients. 

  • Complying with our Quality Management System requirements, statutory procedures, national standards and local design guidance.

There is the opportunity to go onto further study to enable you to be qualified to progress onto Level 6 Civil Engineering apprenticeship.



  • 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, including Mathematics and English

  • Basic awareness of Health and Safety Legislation 

  • Ability to operate a computer and use common software packages (eg MS Office


  • Ability to operate CAD software (e.g. Autocad)

  • Knowledge of civil engineering design and construction processes

  • Ability to work with limited supervision

  • Ability to listen to other staff and absorb technical matters

  • Ability to work, and contribute, as part of a Team player
