In this role you will:
The successful candidate will work in the Electronic Warfare Technology and Enterprise (EWTE) Group in Cyber and Information Systems (CIS) Division or the Energetic Technologies Group in the Counter Terrorism and Security Division at Dstl Porton Down as an apprentice and develop skills in:
Electrical circuit theory; Basic electrical theory, Electronic components; Design of functional electronic systems and circuits from component level; Health and Safety; Oral and written communications; Structured software programming for embedded software, including testing methodology.

Job description

We are looking for someone who:

During your apprenticeship, you will be involved with work supporting our colleagues such as the Home Office, MoD, National Crime Agency, Army, Navy and other government departments, as part of a supportive team with the opportunity to develop and learn about the exciting work of Dstl.

You will be encouraged and supported through the programme to take ownership of your development through Independent Learning to realise your full potential.

This Apprenticeship will consist of a mixture of academic learning through block release at University and practical work within various groups with Dstl.

Ideally you will have an interest in technical hobbies such as computer programming using Arduino and Raspberry Pi, amateur radio, radio control modelling or robotics and skills including soldering, antenna design or building computers. Some of the skills you could develop within this role include:
• Analogue and digital electronics practical experience and theoretical knowledge
• RF circuit design and implementation
• Hardware, Software and Firmware design and implementation
• Digital signal processor and Field Programmable Gate Array design and implementation
• Software Programming and Embedded Software analysis
• Ability to use standard electronic test equipment
• Knowledge of Electronic Warfare tools and techniques
• Mathematical modelling and data processing

In addition to your technical skills, you will be able to think systematically, logically, and creatively; you will have a natural desire to understand how things work and why they perform as they do; you will be able to communicate effectively; and you will be driven by a passion for engineering and technology coupled with the desire to ensure that the United Kingdom armed forces have the best information and equipment possible


You will need to hold five A*-C Grade GCSEs or equivalent, including English & Maths, A-Level standard, or equivalent, in Mathematics and at least one further STEM based subject, such as Physics, ICT, Computing or Electronics.

This could include experience gained through industrial apprentice schemes or military service.

The security of our work means that only UK nationals who have also resided in the UK for the last 5 years (10 years for certain roles) can be considered. Some roles will require Developed Vetting (DV). Unfortunately dual nationals cannot be considered.

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles, and will assess your Behaviours, Ability, Experience and Technical skills.

This is a funded higher level 6 apprenticeship. If you hold a qualification in a similar subject and is of a higher level, you may not be eligible to undertake the role.

The attached job description has full details of the role and the skills, experience, knowledge and behaviours required.

As part of the application you will be required to complete Verbal Reasoning & Numerical Reasoning Ability Tests. You will require internet connection to complete these. The tests are offered in order one after the other so once you have successfully completed the first ability test, you will be invited to start the second. Each test should take about 45 minutes to complete so you will need to allow approximately 1.5 hours to complete all of them. Practice Tests can be found here.

You will need to complete these tests before you can finish your application form. The deadline for these tests is 1200 on 11th March 2020.

Your application will be assessed on your answers to the Technical questions, the behavioural statements and your statement of suitability. Please see the attached job description for the full requirements of this apprenticeship.

If your application is successful, we will invite you to take part in a face to face interview.

Applicants invited to interview will undergo a combined Technical and Behavioural based interview which will assess their skills relating to the requirements detailed in the attached job profiles.
