Trainees - what are we looking for?
We are looking for between four to six trainees to join us each September. We take on recruits from all sorts of backgrounds. You may have just graduated with a law degree, or, like some of our previous trainees, you may have been working for a while and are looking for a complete career change.
To stand out above the rest, you'll need to be a good team player, with a 'get on and do' attitude - whether that's doing stimulating work or slightly more mundane (but no less necessary) tasks. You'll need to be diligent and willing to put in the hours when needed. Above all, we're looking for personality and people skills.
We want to hear about any work experience you have, including any vacation schemes or mini-pupillages you've done. Even if you haven't had much legal work experience, tell us about some of the skills you may have picked up through previous jobs, and how these may be applied to a career in law. Many of the skills you develop away from the legal world can serve you well as a solicitor.
Whatever your background, your commitment and enthusiasm towards progressing a career in law must shine through!
Training and Support
At the beginning of the training contract, we provide an induction programme, which includes the core modules of the Professional Skills Course (PSC). Our induction has been carefully put together to help ease trainees into their new role, meet key people, and give you practical skills.
Structure of seats and info on practice areas/ sector focus
After the induction, you will rotate through four six-month seats, working in the firm’s two divisions – EIR (Employment, Immigration & Reward) and CMI (Creators, Makers & Innovators) and possibly on client secondments. The aim is for you to gain a mixture of contentious and non-contentious experience and real responsibility at an early stage so you can develop as quickly as possible.
All trainees are given the opportunity to request a priority seat in either their second or third seat. We make every effort to give each trainee the opportunity to work with either their priority supervisor or within their priority Legal Practice Group.
It wouldn’t be Lewis Silkin if it was all work and no play. A few weeks after you join we have a ‘meet our new trainees bowling night’ for the whole firm. Other social events throughout the year include everything from Christmas parties to summer soft ball games in the park.
