What does our capital allowances team do?

Tax is a fact of life – it’s deducted from our wages, added to things we buy, paid by companies and rarely out of the news headlines these days. Capital allowances featured heavily in the 2018 Budget and have ever changing legislation, making it a specialist area which clients need assistance with.

But a career in tax isn’t just about numbers. It’s about working with people and businesses to make sure tax doesn’t become an obstacle to their long-term goals.

Capital allowances are a key element of the tax regime and are a valuable tax relief for businesses investing in commercial property. It is all about identifying the items that qualify, then maximising and accelerating this tax relief to give our clients the best tax position for them.

On a day-to-day basis, our team is involved in analysing what businesses spend on building, buying or refurbishing their properties. This could be for any type of commercial property in any business sector, such as offices, warehouses, hotels, bars / restaurants, petrol stations, care homes – the list is endless. Our work also includes site visits to meet our clients and see their properties which provides the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills and get real experience of their properties.

What can you expect?

Our programme will give you a solid foundation in corporate tax as well as a more detailed understanding of capital allowances. With us, you’ll be involved in projects from day one – anything from liaising with clients to attending site visits to the preparation of capital allowance reports. This could involve surveying skills as well as tax knowledge.

The variety of work we do and the range of clients we work with mean you’ll have plenty of opportunity to discover a career path that fits your interests and long-term goals. With our support you’ll have the space to grow professionally so you can confidently take on ever-more challenging tasks.

At RSM, you’ll gain hands-on experience, have access to on-the-job mentoring and train towards a professional accounting or tax qualification. Through our expert training programmes, you will work towards the CTA qualification either through the Tax Pathway route (ATT/CTA) or the Joint Programme route (ACA/CTA). We are committed to ensuring that the route through to qualification is the best for you as an individual and maximises your potential. Alongside your technical training, you will attend internal developmental training courses to ensure you have the professional and personal skills to become a trusted Chartered Tax Advisor. RICS surveying qualifications are also an option.

As you come towards the end of your studies, you’ll have a deep understanding of capital allowances. This will be reflected in the complexity of your client portfolio and your responsibilities, including mentoring more junior members of the team.

What we look for

Tax is a technically demanding discipline, so we look for graduates who are always up for a challenge and are quick to grasp new subjects. While you don’t have to be a maths genius, you will need to be comfortable with numbers.

At RSM, you’ll be helping a big range of clients - from wealthy individuals to major multinationals - so it’s important that you’re adaptable. You’ll often need to explain complex technical information during client meetings and in written reports, so we’re looking for graduates with excellent verbal and written communication skills. We also look for team players who enjoy interacting with others and are curious about how businesses work. If that sounds like you, we know you’ll enjoy being part of our team.
