It is, however, a key part of running a successful company in the long run. For that reason, people with the right kind of skills in the HR discipline often have their pick of jobs within the market and command excellent salaries.
What many people don't realise, however, is that HR isn't just a single field. Instead, it's made up of several specialisations, all with their own unique skill sets. That means anyone interested in pursuing a career in HR can work to develop different skills to suit the different positions available in the industry. Compensation and benefits
One of the major functions of any business's HR department is the management and provisioning of compensation and benefits to the workforce. That job includes designing salary packages, managing health insurance plans, and keeping total compensation within budgetary constraints. - Analytical skills to compare and contrast variations of compensation packages
- Finance skills to track and maintain budgets

- Communications skills to relay advice and recommendations to management regarding employee pay packages
An excellent compensation and benefits specialist will be able to use their skills to balance a company's workforce and talent needs with their overall strategic goals and budgets. They also have to have a keen understanding of how the compensation packages they design affect employee engagement because their work is intimately tied to talent retention as well.
In a growing company, finding and hiring the best available talent can make or break the business. HR information systems specialist
Today's HR departments are dependent on technology like never before, much like the rest of the business world. The technology that keeps it all running requires some specific know-how and technical skills to maintain, and that job now falls to HR information systems specialists. UCAS released its application statistics for 2012 earlier this week, revealing that there has been a 7.4% decrease in the total number of applications for university places in the UK this year.
