Graduates Should Be Enticed To Work Locally Current Affairs

A report has suggested that graduates should work in the city they attended university by being offered a “golden handcuff”.
The report from the RSA think-tank says that universities have a responsibility to encourage local growth. Currently, most graduates are heading back overseas (if they are international students) or flocking to London. Very few graduates stay in the cities where they had studied.
The “golden handcuff” initiatives could include a university campaign to encourage students to stay in the area by offering job advice and matching individuals with jobs. Suggestions for a “graduate clearing system” which would take rejected graduate recruitment applications and send them on to local business, have also been aired.
Jonathan Schifferes, report co-author and RSA senior researcher said, "Universities are key economic assets in every major UK city - our objective should be that their global competitiveness is reinforced through their metro [regional cities] contribution.”

How to Get Your Foot in the Career Door While You’re Still at University
For most students, university is all about having fun. You’ll spend as much time drinking and dancing as you do being educated, and few people give too much thought to what they’ll do once the experience is over. Those who study vocational courses might already have their career paths mapped out before them, but most of us don’t. It might be the case that you’re happy with this arrangement, but then again, it might not. Although it’s normal not to have your whole life planned out at 18 or 21, experience will always work in your favour. The harsh reality is that once you leave university and start applying for jobs, the empty ‘past employment’ section on your CV will work against you. Unless you go against the grain and fill it up, of course…
