One of the oldest law firms in the US, Shearman & Sterling has grown over the years into a global entity with 20 offices in top commercial cities and a total staff strength of over 2000.
The London office was opened in 1972; Shearman was one of the first firms to embark on global expansion. The London office currently has over 300 staff.
In London, we represent major UK and international companies and financial institutions. Our lawyers are acknowledged as market leaders in antitrust, asset management, banking and leveraged finance, capital markets, executive compensation and employee benefits, financial services, intellectual property, international arbitration and litigation, mergers and acquisitions, project development and finance, property, structured finance, and tax.
During the two-year training contract, trainees have four seat rotations, with six months spent in each seat. At least two of these seats will be completed in our core practice areas:
- Project Development & Finance
The remaining two seats will be allocated on trainee preference and business need, so you get to really consider which areas you may like to get exposure to. The global nature of the firm also allows for one of the four rotations to be completed overseas, in offices such as New York, Abu Dhabi, Singapore or Brussels.
Trainees benefit from a trained supervisor and a mentor throughout their training contract and law school. There are also a variety of sports teams, committees, societies and socials to ensure the office is a cohesive and friendly place to work.
Internships & Placements
We run four vacation schemes throughout the year to offer you an insight into life at Shearman & Sterling. Up to 40 participants will have the opportunity to spend two weeks with the Firm, getting to grips with the work a trainee may be exposed to, as well as seeing the social side of the Firm.
It’s a great way to experience life at Shearman & Sterling plus many of those on the schemes go on to successfully gain a place on our training contract as you will be assessed on the scheme.
Shearman & Sterling do not have an apprenticeship scheme.

Salary & Benefits
£45,000 in the first year, rising to £50,000 in the second year. £105,000 NQ salary.

Aspiring candidates should have earned a minimum AAB at A-level (or international equivalent), and be expecting a 2:1 degree. Other attributes are intelligence, clarity of thought, good communication skills, positive attitude, team-work and have a fair knowledge of current-day business activities.
