Established in 1998, the London office is a central part of Orrick’s international network with around 160 staff. It is primarily staffed by UK qualified lawyers, a number of whom also trained with the firm. As you would expect from a firm established in the US there is also a US law capability in the London office.

We recruit a small number of graduates for our training contract programme and run four Open Days in the spring for applicants seeking to find out more about life in a US firm and Orrick.
We currently recruit 6-8 trainees annually so you will be part of a small intake and receive opportunities for responsibility from day one. We value team players and reward collaboration over competition. We aim to give individuals the opportunity to flourish in a lively and supportive work environment and encourage interaction among lawyers across international offices at every level of experience within the firm.
We support learning through a steadfast focus on training and a mentoring programme that will provide trainees with the right foundation for building their legal career and for working with clients. A genuine open door policy means trainees work closely with partners and of counsel as well as associates to gain practical experience in research, drafting, procedural and client-related skills.
Our two year training programme is made up of six four-month seats with regular appraisals throughout. Our dedicated Training Principal overseas the supervision and management of our trainees. There are regular training sessions on legal and soft skills to enhance your development as a lawyer. Our extensive training programme is provided by in-house experts, clients and specialist professionals. Trainees undertake the Professional Skills Course during their Induction Programme.
Internships & Placements
Rather than vacation placements, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe holds 4 Open Days in the Spring. The Open Days are a good opportunity to see the London office of a US law firm in action and help you decide if we are the firm for you.
The day starts with a presentation on life as a solicitor at the firm, but also involves a drafting exercise; a Q&A session with the current trainees; a lunch with a cross-section of lawyers and paralegals; a business negotiation exercise; and a first-round interview for a training contract. The day ends with drinks in the evening.
Candidates are observed and those who impress are invited back within a few weeks for a final stage interview with two partners.
Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe (UK) LLP does not currently offer an apprenticeship scheme.

Salary & Benefits
Orrick provides sponsorship for the GDL and LPC by covering the fees in full and a maintenance allowance of £7,000. Reasonable travel expenses incurred by Open Day participants will be reimbursed as well as full travel expenses for the second round of interviews and up to £50 for the first round.
Currently, first year trainee solicitors are paid a salary of £40,000 and second year trainees receive £44,000. Newly-qualified (NQ) solicitors start at £85,000.

Candidates applying for training contracts should have secured a minimum of three A-level passes with A or B grades and have obtained or be on track to obtain a 2:1 or higher degree in any discipline. Candidates must also pass the Graduate Diploma in Law (if applicable) and Legal Practice course at their first attempt.
Candidates must show an aptitude for excellence, hard work, strong ethics and communication skills, as well as the ability to provide quality customer service.

Applications for Open Days and training contracts open on 12 October 2017 can be accessed online here and submitted by 9 February 2018 for an Open Day place and by 29 June 2018 for a training contract commencing August 2020.
The firm offers up to 6-8 trainee positions each year.
For non-Open Day attendees, those shortlisted undertake a two stage interview process conducted in the London office during the summer.
The first set of interviews is conducted by the recruitment manager or HR manager and an of counsel or senior associate; the second round is conducted by two partners.
