BP, is a global company engaged in the production of oil and gas. Worldwide, the company employs 80,000 people in various core, technical and support roles, based across multiple facilities, including refineries, offshore platforms and offices on six continents. In the UK, BP operates out of six main locations: Aberdeen, Canary Wharf, Hull, Pangbourne, Sunbury, and Milton Keynes.
BP began life in 1909 as the Anglo-Persian Oil Company after oil was discovered in Persia; the company was renamed the British Petroleum Company in 1954. Apart from this entity, present-day BP consists of heritage oil companies such as Standard Oil of Ohio or SOHIO; Amoco, Arco, Castrol and Aral.
The graduate programme is conducted within the Business, Engineering and Science divisions, across the company facilities in Sunbury, Aberdeen, Canary Wharf and Milton Keynes.
Each programme includes full support for obtaining relevant professional qualifications and credentials from the industry and discipline specific professional bodies.
The formal training programme is dependent on the specific area of business in which the graduate employee is based, mainly across three core activities: Exploration & Production (Upstream), Refining & Marketing (Downstream), Integrated Supply & Trading (IST). Each of these business areas employs a mix of graduates and professionals from the Business, Engineering and Science streams. The content and structure of the main training programmes is provided below:
Upstream and Downstream: A 2-3-year programme known as ‘Challenge’, consisting of placements on the technical and business side with the help of a dedicated buddy and mentor. A highly structured programme offering real professional roles in which you will develop your technical expertise. Training and other opportunities to develop competencies within your disciplines and the opportunity to learn from and network with a group of peers and more experienced BP colleagues.
IST: The training programme is delivered in two variants (Finance Commercial and Trading). Each runs for a period of three years, with three placements of 12 months duration across various departments within the Finance Commercial and Trading business areas.
Internships & Placements
Summer vacation placements and 12-month industrial training programmes are offered in Business, Engineering and Science. The company takes on around 100 interns each year, for summer placements of 11 weeks duration and year-long industrial training schemes.
At the beginning of each programme, a detailed set of programme objectives and expectations is finalised in discussion with the line manager and these are frequently revisited through a formal performance appraisal process.
Apart from the line manager, each intern is also assigned an exclusive mentor for providing additional guidance and support when necessary.
