Allen & Overy is a leading global law firm operating in over 30 countries. We cover 99% of the world’s economy, working with companies, organisations and governments on issues of incredible scope and complexity. We’re a future forward business and the only one to have topped the Financial Times Innovative Law Firm ranking four times.
The world is changing, and we need to change with it. At A&O, our trainees can combine new ways of thinking with their knowledge of the evolving world to become lawyers of the future. Trainees who know they’re made for more can expect a rewarding experience that will help them cultivate a career that counts.
In each of their seats they’ll support associates and partners, with exposure to work that crosses departments and borders – in fact, 73% of the firm’s work involves two or more jurisdictions. Around 80% of trainees have the chance to spend six months in one of our 44 overseas offices, or on secondment to one of our various clientele – who include 87% of Forbes’ top 100 public companies.
We’re dedicated to challenging the status quo and leading the way in commercial law. We’re working to equip our people with the skills and knowledge they will need to operate and thrive in the legal landscape of the future. For trainees, this means an in-house training programme with flexibility and opportunity – like the chance to take a litigation course alongside their rotations.
Our people are talented and motivated and enjoy a supportive and collaborative environment. Around half of our trainees have a degree in a subject other than law – so whatever your academic background, we will help you develop into an exceptional lawyer of the highest possible standard.
Starting a Training Contract with Allen & Overy is just the beginning of what will be a stimulating and rewarding legal career. Throughout the two years of your Training Contract, we will work closely with you to ensure you have the right support to develop into a successful commercial solicitor.
Your training will be based on four 6-month rotations (known as ‘seats’) through a number of departments or practice areas, where you will sit with a partner or an associate.
Seats are available across our practice areas, allowing trainees to experience the full range of work we do and you have the opportunity to express your preferences so you can spend time in the areas that are of particular interest (subject to business need). Our core transactional areas of expertise are Banking, Corporate and International Capital Markets, and as a trainee you will spend at least twelve months of your Training Contract gaining experience in at least two of these areas.
The firm offers its trainees the option of completing a litigation course. This means that trainees do not need to spend time in the firm’s litigation and dispute resolution department to gain their contentious experience if they are sure their interests lie elsewhere. There are also opportunities for trainees to undertake an international or client secondment during their final year of training.
Internships & Placements
Allen & Overy offers 50 vacation placements across the year from all degree disciplines. We have two schemes across winter and summer, with students joining us in their penultimate or final year of undergraduate study or who have already graduated. You will gain experience in one of our practice areas, where you will work alongside our lawyers on real deals and cases.
