ALDI, an abbreviation for Albrecht Discount, after founders Theo and Karl Albrecht, is a global discount retail dealer of German origin, with roots going back to 1913 as a single store operation in Essen.
The first ALDI store was opened in 1958 in Essen and consists of over 8,000 stores across mainland Europe, the UK, Australia and USA. The first UK store was opened in 1990 and today, there are more than 400 stores in operation across the UK and Ireland. The UK corporate office is located in Manchester.
The Area Manager Graduate Training Programme is a year-long programme, at the end of which successful trainees are assigned with the responsibility of managing around four to six stores independently. The programme is structured as follows:
- Two-week orientation training conducted by a senior, experienced colleague;
- Seven weeks of in-store training;
- Twelve weeks assignment of running a store as a Store Manager;
- Two week break;
- Two weeks Regional Office training covering store operations, support functions and finance, buying and general administration, followed by a further two weeks in the Logistics function;
- Four weeks of exclusive Area Manager training, continued after a one-week break for an additional period of six weeks;
- Eight weeks of covering a designated area with four to six stores while the respective area managers are on leave;
- Two week break and the final two weeks to assess performance throughout the previous 45 weeks;
Additional formal training conducted simultaneously with the above programme, covers topics such as the ALDI Management System and Influencing Skills, Health and Safety, Recruitment and Retention and Trading Law.

All placements last 12 months and pay £25,000 plus 4 weeks holiday allowance
ALDI offer an Apprenticeship Scheme which work towards a level 3 apprenticeship. Salary & Benefits
Graduate trainees receive a starting salary of £40,000, reviewed annually and increasing to £62,000 upon completion of four years in service.
Also on offer is a company car with all expenses borne by the company, five-week annual vacation entitlement, pension scheme, private medical insurance, life assurance and the opportunity for undertaking overseas secondments from the second year of employment onwards.
Retail placement trainees receive a salary of £20,000 and a 15-day leave entitlement over a period of nine months plus bank holidays.
The requirements for the Retail Placement Programme are an earned or expected 2:1 degree in any discipline, own car, a full driving licence and a UK work permit.
Requirements for the Area Manager Graduate Training Programme include a 2:1 or higher degree in any discipline and personal attributes such as a consistent record of academic and extracurricular achievements, self-initiative, motivation, flexibility and resilience to perform under pressure and adapt to dynamic business and other events; a creative and logical thought process, excellent attention to detail and conflict/problem resolution skills and a broad perspective with respect to working in the retail business.
People management, leadership and organisational skills are crucial in working as an ALDI Area Manager. The personal skills and attributes listed above for the graduate programme are also applicable for the retail placement trainees as well.
