Accountancy: Payroll Career Paths

Accountancy is an incredibly varied profession with a large number of different roles available within the industry. Payroll is increasingly important for businesses; the majority of companies have at least some form of payroll department. The duties and responsibilities of a payroll employee are constantly changing, meaning there are a number of different paths which can be taken during an accountancy career, from administrator to international payroll manager.

International payroll manager…

An international payroll manager is responsible for looking after the payroll of a business which has employees in a number of different companies. This is known as an expat payroll, in which employees are treated as if they are being paid in their country of origin rather than their country of residence. This is important for tax purposes, especially if an individual moves to a country which has significantly different tax rates.

Payroll manager…

A payroll manager has an important role to play. They look after their team and ensure that the payroll department of a business runs smoothly and effectively. With salaries being hugely important to employees and employer alike, this role is utterly essential and ideal for someone who has a great deal of experience within the industry.

Payroll administrator…

If you have ambitions of climbing to the top of the payroll ladder, this is an ideal place to start. A payroll administrator has many important responsibilities and is a key part of the team. However, their workload is not quite as much as that of a manager. Distributing tax forms is one of the most essential tasks an administrator will perform, from P45s to end of year tax forms. The end of each tax year brings around a number of highly important duties for both tax and legal purposes, which must be fulfilled by the payroll administrator on behalf of the company.

Payroll temp…

A payroll temp job can be an excellent way to begin your career, giving you the chance to experience the kind of roles and duties expected of a professional. Payroll temp positions can become available at any time, but are most common during the festive period and other times of year which see increased consumer activity. Of course, a payroll temp does not have to be someone new to the profession, and temping can also be an excellent chance for an experienced worker to get back into the industry and earn some extra money as well as experience.

Finding payroll jobs…

As shown from the aforementioned examples, there are many different payroll jobs available for those looking for a career in accountancy. With a range of exciting and varied positions, accountancy is an extremely worthwhile career path which can be highly rewarding as well as interesting.
