The best unis for general engineering are: Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, Warwick, Exeter, Leeds, Leicester according to the Guardian league tables.
Tina, you don't have to specialise in engineering right from first year. You can start as general engineer and move to other fields. Industrial wise, I would say Cranfield, Stratchlyde, Imperial, Aston, Brunel, RGU (Scotland) are some of the big names industrially. Just a note of advice, if you are paying £9000 fees, you should look into a university that has a sandwich pattern course.
