A degree in mechanical engineering is a good start and doing everything to specialise in automotive engineering. Definitely, get some work experience in the automotive engineering industry. Don't expect to land yourself a race car engineering job straight away. You'll probably have to start as a low-level engineering assistant in car company then work your way up.
