What kind of careers are available in the oil industry? Are they well paid? Do most roles require a degree?

There's loads... Drilling engineer, wellsite geologist geographical information systems officer - check out all the occupations here: http://www.allaboutcareers.com/careers/occupations/energy-utilities.htm. There's other non scientific roles as well such as in sales, marketing, management, HR... Most scientific/technical roles will require a degree. And yes, graduate roles do tend to be well paid - particularly engineering ones.

Can I get a job in the oil/energy industry with a biological sciences degree?

Yes def! The industry hires some biologists to asses environmental impact of oil-fields, drilling etc. In the UK, with the increase of off-shore wind farms, companies might employ marine biologist to asses impact on the environment. Also biologists might work on the personal responsible for limiting the damage caused by oil spills etc such as working on clean up and trying to limit the impact on wildlife. Biologists (as well as chemists) are also needed in the lab to help recycle waste products caused by oil etc too.

Speak your mind…
