How to get work experience in a school?

Does anyone know how I go about getting work experience in a school? I don't have any teaching qualifications, just want to see whether teaching might be something I'd be interested in for a future career. Will I need a security check thingy as well?

The best way is to contact the school directly. I'd advise you to identify relevant/ local schools of interest then contact them by telephone initially to enquire whether they take people on work experience (most do as it is a requirement for PGCE applications that you have at least some schools based experience). Expect to be asked to contact them in writing (i.e. CV and covering letter) outlining what you're after and when you want the experience. Ensure you target your CV and covering letter towards teaching. The TDA website http://www.tda.gov.uk/ has a lot of information about becoming a teacher, what it's really like etc as well as information about a couple of specific experience programmes. I don't know your age/ what stage you're at, but some organisations will specify a minimum age. Whether or not you will need a security check (CRB check) will depend on the individual school's policy. Strictly speaking, you only need one if you are likely to be alone with 'vulnerable' people (i.e. the school pupils), so some schools will only require one if this is the case, or ensure you are never alone with the pupils. Other schools prefer to have everyone CRB checked. Hope that helps
