How to become an astronaut?

Just a thought, but how do people become astronauts? Is there a particular career route? Do I have to do science at university? I've been reading about Virgin Galactic and I wouldn't half mind becoming a pilot for their space business.

I was actually an astronaut in a past life and I just watched Transformers: Dark side of the moon! There is actually a career path... the only issue is that the obvious route through the US space program has now closed and perhaps a bigger problem is that you need to be a US citizen. Having said that there are increasing EU options so you never know what will happen. I would suggest you concentrate on getting the best grades you can in a Science, engineering or Maths degree. If you want to a specific Pilot role then you are likely to need experience of flying in the military before you make the transition...
