How do you know which area of Engineering to pursue?

How can you work out which area to get involved in... as I am pretty sure chemical engineering is completely different to mechanical engineering for instance?

Well for starters I'd look at the engineering subsectors on this site - they give you a pretty good idea of the different areas of engineering. Then I'd think about two thinks: your interests and your skills. Do you like working on big scale projects or small things? Are you more about attention to detail or big solutions? You might want to look at the career options for each type of engineering and what industry employs certain types of engineer too.
