Middlesex University

Introduction…

Middlesex University has positioned itself as an “international university with roots in London”, taking pride in equipping students with work and life skills. It has a culturally diverse student population of over 22,000, most of whom are undergraduates and nearly half are mature students. They are based at one of Middlesex University’s three campuses in London. Middlesex University also has international campuses in Mauritius and Dubai.

The university has invested a significant amount of money into its flagship Hendon Campus to offer its students top-class facilities and it is one of the few London universities that can really lay claim to being a true campus university.

Middlesex University offers a wide range of degrees, many of which are vocational or professional. Students study at one of the four academic schools: the School of Arts and Education, Business School, School of Engineering and Information Sciences, School of Health and Social Sciences.

Notable alumni from the Middlesex University or its previous institutions include comedians Alan Carr, Russell Kane and Johnny Vegas; actress and writer Arabella Weir; TV presenter Dermot O’Leary; musician Alison Goldfrapp; actor and “British treasure” Helen Mirren; and The Kinks’ Ray Davies.

Location & Campus…

Middlesex University is located on the fringes of London and at the edge of the tube map. The Hendon Campus is located ten minutes from the Northern line station Hendon Central, which whisks you into central London in about 30 minutes. Hendon’s a mixed bag; there are some posh nice bits and other parts that leave a lot to be desired. A big plus is that it is near the Brent Cross shopping centre.

The campus is the real star of Hendon. Middlesex University has pumped over £95 million into it. There’s the handsome College Building with an impressive glass roof over its courtyard, a large library with over 700 study spaces and over 240 IT work stations, the Hatchcroft building with state-of-the-art biomedical, psychology and computer laboratories, a student centre and various sports facilities.

Middlesex University also has a specialist healthcare campus in Archway and campuses in Mauritius and Dubai.

University Accommodation…

Middlesex University has 940 rooms available across four halls of residence, Usher Hall (no relation to the RnB star), Platt Hall, Writtle House and Ivy Hall. These are all self-catering and have en-suite rooms, apart from Writtle Hall. Usher Hall is located next to Hendon Campus, whilst Writtle House and Platt Hall are 20 minutes away. Ivy Hall is situated between the Archway and Hendon Campuses. Rent for a room in a hall of residence ranges between £111 and £128 a week.

Tuition Fees…

Middlesex University will be charging UK and EU undergraduates £9,000 a year in tuition fees. Eligible students can apply for a tuition fee loan from the government to cover the costs of their course. You can find out more information here

Middlesex University

Living Costs…

Due to its location on the outskirts of London, Middlesex students avoid some of the steep costs faced by students attending university near the centre. As a reasonable estimate, students living away from home will probably need between £7,000 and £10,000 a year to cover living costs. However, living expenses will really depend on individual lifestyles, with some students getting by on less, others more.

Bursaries & Scholarships…

Middlesex University has 420 National Scholarship awards up for grabs which will be awarded based on family income and other criteria. These consist of a £2,000 tuition fee discount and a £1,000 cash bursary. Nightlife…

Middlesex University has plenty of places to eat and drink on campus. The Students’ Union organises student entertainment, including quiz nights, club nights and gigs, topped off with big end of year balls. Those to have graced the stage at Middlesex University include Babyshambles, Annie Mac, Chipmunk and Pendulum.

Whilst Middlesex’s campuses might not be in a hotbed of student nightlife, their London transport links means the bright lights of London’s nightlife are only a tube or bus ride away.

Sports & Societies…

Sports wise, Hendon campus has a Fitness Pod, which has gym and cardio equipment, personal trainers and a therapy room, and a real tennis court. If you’re not sure what “real tennis” is, watch this video. There are also various fitness classes and other activities you can get involved with.

There are a number of societies at Middlesex University too, from Dance and Investment Society to Bright Futures and RAG.
