Standard Life Plc was first established in 1825 as The Standard Life Assurance Company and reincorporated as a mutual assurance company in 1932. Until 1996, the company operated in the UK, Canada and Ireland through a network of branches or third party agencies. The company was demutualised and a new entity Standard Life Plc was listed on the LSE. Standard Life is a leading long term savings and investments with over 6.5 million customers worldwide.

At present, Standard Life Plc operates with 10,000 employees servicing over 6.5 million customers across the UK, Canada, USA, Ireland, Austria, Germany, India, China and Hong Kong. In the UK, the company is headquartered at Edinburgh with four main business divisions—Standard Life Wealth, Standard Life Assurance Limited, Group HQ and Standard Life Investments.
