Latham & Watkins was established in the US in 1934, by Dana Latham and Paul Watkins. The firm gradually diversified its practice to become a full-service, international law firm, which was voted as the ‘Law Firm of the Decade’ by Legal Business in 2007.
The first office was established in Los Angeles; thereafter offices in Orange County, Washington, D.C., San Diego, Chicago and New York followed. International expansion began in 1990 with the opening of an office in London, followed by offices in Brussels, Barcelona, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Rome, Madrid, Moscow, Munich, Paris, Milan and Düsseldorf.
The Asian market was covered with an office in Hong Kong in 1994, followed by offices in Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing and Singapore. In 2008 the firm opened four offices in the Middle East, in Doha, Riyadh, Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
At present, the firm has 32 offices with over 2,100 lawyers generating $2.2 billion in global revenue. It has a unique ‘one-firm’ culture with no fixed headquarters. Associate lawyers have representation on all the firm’s administrative committees except the Executive Committee and Finance committee, and take an active role in recruitment and training activities.
Latham & Watkins hires approximately 20 trainees every August. The training contract consists of four six-month seats, including mandatory Corporate, Finance and Litigation seats. During your third or fourth seat there is also an opportunity to spend six months in one of our overseas offices such as Hong Kong, Brussels, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Singapore, Dubai, Paris, Moscow or New York. Trainees share an office with their supervisor in each seat and are also assigned an associate mentor as an extra means of support.
Formal training is provided through Latham & Watkins Academies which are held in the first, third and fifth years post qualification. This is in addition to the practice-based internal training sessions and the PSC during the training contract.
Internships & Placements
Latham & Watkins' London office offers two-week placement schemes twice a year, both during the summer, for candidates who would like to obtain a training contract at the firm.
One scheme is for candiates who are in their final year non-law, who have graduated, or who are doing their GDL or LPC. The other scheme is for penultimate year law students. If you choose to participate in one of our vacation schemes, you will spend time in two of our departments; a week in each. Before arrival you’ll be invited to tell us your preferences in terms of practice areas, and we’ll do our best to place you in a seat that you request. During each seat, you’ll share an office with a supervisor who is a qualified lawyer, and you will be treated like any other Latham & Watkins' trainee.
Latham & Watkins do not offer an apprenticeship scheme.

How To Apply
For our summer schemes, you need to apply online between 2 October 2014 and 12 January 2015. The deadline for applications for training contracts is 31 July. Applications should be submitted through the online system.
Applicants for our vacation scheme will be invited to attend a half-day assessment to meet a mix of partners and associates and complete two 30-minute interviews. Either a partner and an associate or two associates will conduct the interviews. The first will focus on the application form and awareness of Latham & Watkins. The second will focus on commercial awareness. There’s a presentation about the firm given by a partner, an associate and a trainee, and then lunch with the trainees where you’ll be able to ask questions and find out what it’s really like to be a trainee at Latham & Watkins. If you attend a vacation scheme and decide that you wish to apply for a training contract with us, you will be asked to complete one further interview during the second week of the scheme.
Applicants for our training contracts who do not attend the vacation scheme are asked to attend a half-day assessment, to complete one 30 minute interview covering the application form and Latham & Watkins awareness, one 45 minute written task and finally a 45 minute interview to discuss the written task and to field queries involving current and commercial awareness topics.
